What to Expect

Starting from the Windigo visitor area, you'll pick up the Feldtmann Lake Trail and immediately enter the dense boreal forest that makes Isle Royale feel like another planet. The path is rooty and rocky underfoot — this is Isle Royale, so expect to watch your footing more than your watch. After about a mile and a half of winding through spruce and birch, a spur trail breaks off toward the overlook, and the trees open up to reveal a sweeping vista of Grace Creek spilling into Grace Harbor with Lake Superior stretching to the horizon beyond. The rocky perch at the overlook is the kind of spot where you sit down for five minutes and look up an hour later. At under four miles round trip, this is one of the best bang-for-your-effort day hikes out of Windigo — perfect for hikers who just stepped off the ferry and want a real taste of the island without committing to a backcountry odyssey.

Safety Advisory

The rocky overlook has no railings or barriers. The drop is real, and the rock can be slippery when wet — keep your distance from the edge, especially with kids.

Isle Royale is genuine wilderness with an active wolf and moose population. Make noise on the trail and store all food properly, even on a short day hike.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time this hike for your arrival or departure day at Windigo — the ferry schedule usually gives you enough of a window to knock this out before or after the boat, and it beats sitting around the dock.

Trail Tip

The trail surface is all roots and rocks, so leave the trail runners at home and wear proper hiking boots with ankle support. A trekking pole helps on the uneven sections, especially if rain has made the roots slick.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars to the overlook — you can sometimes spot moose browsing along Grace Creek below, and the harbor view rewards a closer look at passing lakers on Superior.
