Hike to Minong Ridge Overlook
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Moose are common along this corridor and can be dangerously aggressive, especially cows with calves in spring and bulls during fall rut. Give them at least 100 feet and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.
The rocky, root-laced terrain is ankle-roll country — sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are essential, not trail runners. A twisted ankle out here means a complicated evacuation since there's no road access anywhere on Isle Royale.
Weather on Lake Superior changes fast and without warning. A sunny morning can become a cold, wind-driven rain within an hour. Pack a rain shell and an extra insulating layer even on bluebird days.

Pro Tips
Start early from Windigo to catch morning light on Lake Superior from the overlook — the sun angle makes the Canadian shore pop, and you'll beat the midday haze that rolls in most summer afternoons.
Bring a proper topographic map and compass, not just your phone. Cell service is nonexistent on Isle Royale, GPS can be unreliable under heavy tree cover, and trail junctions along the Minong Ridge are not always well-marked.
The overlook itself has no formal viewing platform — scout about fifty yards in either direction along the ridge for alternate vantage points where you can frame both the lake and the island's interior valleys in a single shot.
