What to Expect

This is Isle Royale at its most uncompromising. From McCargoe Cove, the Minong Ridge Trail climbs hard and fast onto a rocky spine that runs along the island's north shore, serving up sweeping views of Lake Superior that make you forget your legs are on fire. The trail is primitively maintained — and that's being generous. You'll pick your way over ankle-twisting rocks, weave through root-choked sections, and navigate stretches marked only by cairns where the path essentially disappears into the boreal forest. The roughly seven miles to Todd Harbor deliver a rhythm of brutal climbs and brief ridgeline respites, with the dark shimmer of Superior always pulling your eye north. When you finally drop into Todd Harbor's quiet shoreline, the remoteness hits you — you're as far from a paved road as you can get in the Midwest. This trail is built for experienced backpackers who want to earn their solitude the hard way.

Safety Advisory

The rocky sections become dangerously slick when wet. Rain or morning dew can turn routine scrambles into slip-and-fall hazards — trekking poles are not optional here.

There is no reliable water between McCargoe Cove and Todd Harbor. Carry a full supply and a filter, because the small streams you might find are seasonal and can run dry by late summer.

Moose are common along this corridor and can be aggressive during calving season in late May and June. Give them a wide berth — at least 50 feet — and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from McCargoe Cove heading west — the trail markings are slightly easier to follow in this direction, and you get the toughest climb out of the way while your legs are fresh.

Trail Tip

Carry a real compass and the NPS topographic map, not just your phone. GPS signal is unreliable on the ridge, and the cairn-marked sections can be genuinely disorienting in fog or low light.

Trail Tip

Todd Harbor has a dock and shelters, making it an ideal overnight before turning back or continuing the full Minong Ridge. Claim a spot early in the day — this section sees more traffic than the trail's western reaches.
