Belle Campground
The Quick Take
Belle is the quiet sibling in Joshua Tree's campground lineup -- a tiny, first-come-first-served spot tucked just off Pinto Basin Road with barely enough sites to fill a small parking lot. That size is the whole appeal. While nearby Jumbo Rocks draws weekend crowds numbering in the hundreds, Belle stays genuinely calm, surrounded by the same surreal boulder formations without the neighbor-on-top-of-you energy. The trade-off is real: no water, no hookups, no camp host, and pit toilets that earn their name. You are fully on your own out here. But at twenty-five bucks a night with zero reservation hassle, it is one of the most straightforward ways to sleep among the rocks. Best for experienced desert campers who want a low-key basecamp near the park's eastern highlights without fighting for a spot at the more popular loops.

Pro Tips
Belle is first-come-first-served only, so arrive Thursday afternoon or early Friday morning for a weekend stay -- by Friday evening, even this small campground fills up from October through May. Physically claim your site first by setting up gear, then drive to the nearest entrance station within an hour to pay. If you roll in after the stations close, you have until morning.
You are a short drive from Cholla Cactus Garden, one of the park's most photogenic spots, and the Arch Rock trailhead is just a few minutes north on Pinto Basin Road. Sunset at Cholla Garden is legitimately one of the best free shows in California's desert parks -- the backlit cactus spines glow like fiber optics.
Bring at least two gallons of water per person per day and a few extra for cooking and cleanup -- there is no water source anywhere in this campground or nearby. A five-gallon jug with a spigot makes camp life dramatically easier than wrestling individual bottles. Also pack a windscreen for your stove; Pinto Basin funnels wind harder than you expect.
