Sheep Pass Group Campground
The Quick Take
Sheep Pass sits in the geographic sweet spot of Joshua Tree -- close enough to the park's best hiking and climbing that you won't burn half your morning driving, but tucked among towering rock formations that make the place feel more like a private amphitheater than a campground. With only a handful of group sites, the whole operation is reservation-only and built specifically for parties traveling together, which means you skip the free-for-all scramble that defines peak season at the park's first-come spots. The trade-off is real: no water, no flush toilets, no frills of any kind. You are hauling everything in and everything out. But what you get in return is a centrally located base camp surrounded by some of the most photogenic desert scenery in the Southwest, with dark skies overhead that justify the logistics. Book this if your group actually wants to spend time in the park rather than fighting for a site at it.

Pro Tips
Reservations open six months out on Recreation.gov and group sites at Joshua Tree get snapped up fast for October through April weekends -- set a calendar reminder and book the moment your window opens. Midweek in November or February is the sweet spot if you have scheduling flexibility.
Ryan Mountain trailhead is a short drive from Sheep Pass and gives you the single best panoramic view in the park for moderate effort. Hit it at sunrise before the parking area fills, then spend the afternoon bouldering at the rock formations within walking distance of camp.
There is zero water at Sheep Pass -- not a drop. Bring at least two gallons per person per day, more if you are cooking or visiting in warmer months. Stock up in Twentynine Palms on the way in, where the grocery stores are better stocked than the town of Joshua Tree.
