What to Expect

Eureka Peak is Joshua Tree's quiet summit — the one most visitors drive right past on their way to Ryan Mountain. The route begins in a sandy wash that feels more like walking on a beach than hiking a mountain, sapping your energy before the real climbing starts. As you gain elevation through juniper and pinyon pine, the desert floor drops away and the views begin to justify the effort. The nearly 1,750 feet of elevation gain hits hardest in the final push, where loose footing and exposed terrain demand your full attention. From the top, you get a panoramic sweep of the Coachella Valley, the Little San Bernardino Mountains, and on clear days, the Salton Sea shimmering in the distance. At nearly ten miles round trip, this is a commitment hike — best suited for experienced desert hikers who want solitude and a summit without the Ryan Mountain crowds.

Safety Advisory

The sandy wash and exposed ridgeline offer no shade whatsoever. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 110 degrees at lower elevations, making this trail genuinely dangerous from June through September — heat exhaustion cases are reported here every year.

Route-finding can be tricky in the wash sections where the trail disappears into sand. Download the GPX track beforehand, because cell service is nonexistent and a wrong turn adds miles in punishing terrain.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Black Rock Canyon trailhead, which has reliable parking and pit toilets — arriving before 8 AM on winter weekends guarantees a spot and cooler temperatures for the sandy wash section.

Trail Tip

Carry at least three liters of water per person. There is zero shade and zero water sources on this route, and the sand sections will make you drink faster than you expect.

Trail Tip

The summit register is tucked behind a rock cairn just below the true high point — sign it, then walk fifty yards north for the best unobstructed view toward the Coachella Valley, which is also the ideal photography angle in morning light.
