Hike Fortynine Palms Oasis
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
There is virtually no shade on the exposed ridge section, and ground temperatures can exceed air temperature by thirty degrees or more — this trail has produced heat-related emergencies even in spring. If it's above 85 degrees, reconsider or start at dawn.
The trail may be seasonally closed in summer to protect desert bighorn sheep who depend on the oasis as their primary water source — check with the park before heading out.
Rattlesnakes are common near the oasis, particularly in warmer months. Watch where you place your hands and feet on the rocky descent into the canyon.

Pro Tips
The trailhead is outside the park's main entrance off Highway 62, so you can hit this trail without paying the park entrance fee — park at the small lot at the end of Canyon Road in Twentynine Palms.
Bring at least two liters of water per person and wear shoes with aggressive tread — the descent into the canyon involves loose gravel on sloped rock that gets slippery, especially on the return climb.
The best photography angle of the oasis is from the ridge just before you descend into the canyon — you get the full cluster of palms framed against the dark canyon walls. Once you're down at the oasis, the viewing area keeps you at a distance, so bring a longer lens if you want close-ups of wildlife near the water.
