Hike Oasis of Mara
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Joshua Tree summers are brutal — daytime temperatures regularly exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit, which turns even a flat half-mile into a genuine heat risk. If you're visiting between June and September, go at sunrise or skip it entirely until the shoulder season returns.
Trail Details
- 1
Arrive in the first hour after sunrise — the oasis draws desert birds and the occasional coyote at dawn, and the low-angle light through the fan palms is genuinely striking for photos.
- 2
Pair this walk with a stop inside the visitor center before or after — the exhibits give you context that makes the interpretive panels on the trail land harder, and you can ask rangers which wildlife has been spotted recently.
- 3
Walk the loop counterclockwise so the palm grove comes into view as a reveal rather than greeting you immediately at the start — it's a small thing, but the framing is better and the bench near the palms catches morning shade on that side.
