Hike to Dumpling Overlook
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
This is active brown bear country — make noise continuously on the trail, carry bear spray accessible on your chest or hip (not buried in your pack), and never hike alone. Bears use this corridor regularly between the lakes and high ground.
Weather in Katmai shifts fast and without warning — temperatures can drop sharply even in summer, and fog can roll in and erase the trail above the overlook. Bring rain layers and a warm mid-layer even on bluebird mornings.
Beyond the maintained overlook, the route to Dumpling Mountain's summit is unmarked and exposed — if visibility drops or storms build, turn back at the overlook rather than navigating open alpine terrain without a clear path.

Pro Tips
Time your hike for late morning or midday when bears are typically fishing at Brooks Falls rather than wandering the trail corridor — you'll have a quieter ascent and can catch the bear viewing action when you return to camp.
If you're pushing to the Dumpling Mountain summit beyond the overlook, bring trekking poles — the unmaintained upper route gets steep and loose, and the extra stability is worth the weight on the floatplane ride in.
The overlook faces roughly northwest, making late afternoon and evening light ideal for photography — Naknek Lake lights up gold, and on clear days the Aleutian Range volcanoes stack up along the horizon in perfect layers.
