What to Expect

This is one of the most surreal hikes in the entire national park system. There is no marked trailhead, no maintained path, and no sign telling you where to go — you are dropped by bush plane into raw Arctic wilderness and walk toward a horizon of sand dunes that have no business existing above the Arctic Circle. The route crosses tundra, scrubby willows, and creek beds before the landscape opens into 25 square miles of rolling dunes that look transplanted from the Sahara. The sand underfoot is surprisingly firm in places and energy-sapping in others, with a gentle but steady climb that keeps your legs honest. The payoff is standing on a dune crest in absolute silence, surrounded by nothing but sand and sky, knowing you are likely the only human for dozens of miles. This trail is for adventurers who want a genuinely once-in-a-lifetime landscape and are comfortable with the logistics of getting to one of America's least-visited parks.

Safety Advisory

There is no trail, no signage, and no cell service — carry a satellite communicator (InReach or SPOT) and a paper topo map. GPS coordinates for the dunes are essential since the landscape offers few landmarks.

Grizzly bears and caribou share this corridor. Store food in bear-resistant containers, make noise on approach through willows, and carry bear spray with the safety off during brushy stretches.

Dehydration is a real risk despite the Arctic setting — summer temps on the dark sand can reach the 90s, and there is zero shade on the dunes. Carry at least three liters and purification gear for river water.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Charter your bush plane from Kotzebue or Bettles — most pilots will land you on a gravel bar along the Kobuk River, putting you roughly two miles from the dunes' edge. Confirm your pickup time and backup plan before they fly off.

Trail Tip

Bring trekking poles for the tundra crossings and ankle-high waterproof boots — the approach involves boggy sections and shallow creek fords that will soak low-cut trail runners in minutes.

Trail Tip

Late June through early July offers 24-hour daylight and warm sand, which means you can photograph the dunes with long golden shadows at midnight without a headlamp or a deadline.
