Great Kobuk Sand Dunes Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
There is no trail, no signage, and no cell service — carry a satellite communicator (InReach or SPOT) and a paper topo map. GPS coordinates for the dunes are essential since the landscape offers few landmarks.
Grizzly bears and caribou share this corridor. Store food in bear-resistant containers, make noise on approach through willows, and carry bear spray with the safety off during brushy stretches.
Dehydration is a real risk despite the Arctic setting — summer temps on the dark sand can reach the 90s, and there is zero shade on the dunes. Carry at least three liters and purification gear for river water.

Pro Tips
Charter your bush plane from Kotzebue or Bettles — most pilots will land you on a gravel bar along the Kobuk River, putting you roughly two miles from the dunes' edge. Confirm your pickup time and backup plan before they fly off.
Bring trekking poles for the tundra crossings and ankle-high waterproof boots — the approach involves boggy sections and shallow creek fords that will soak low-cut trail runners in minutes.
Late June through early July offers 24-hour daylight and warm sand, which means you can photograph the dunes with long golden shadows at midnight without a headlamp or a deadline.
