What to Expect

This trail is really two hikes stitched together. The first half follows the popular path to Tanalian Falls, where most day-trippers turn around. Push past the falls and you cross into designated wilderness — and the crowd evaporates. The trail climbs through dense spruce forest before opening up to reveal Kontrashibuna Lake, a glacially-carved basin ringed by snow-streaked peaks that looks like it belongs on a postcard nobody's sent yet. The water is impossibly clear, fed by snowmelt and rainfall with no road or development anywhere near it. At roughly five and a half miles roundtrip, the moderate difficulty comes less from any single steep pitch and more from the cumulative effort and uneven, root-laced tread beyond the falls. This is a trail for hikers who want to earn something most visitors never see — Lake Clark's backcountry without the bush plane commitment.

Safety Advisory

This is prime brown bear country. Make noise consistently, carry bear spray accessible on your chest or belt, and know how to use it. Solo hiking here demands extra vigilance.

Beyond Tanalian Falls, the trail enters true wilderness with no cell service, no other hikers as backup, and potentially unmaintained tread. A twisted ankle out here is a serious logistical problem — tell someone your plan and expected return time.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Treat the falls as your halfway rest stop, not your destination — the best scenery is entirely beyond Tanalian Falls, and most people never see it.

Trail Tip

Lake Clark is fly-in or boat-in access only from most directions, so coordinate your transport timing carefully. Give yourself at least five hours round-trip including time at the lake to avoid rushing back to a scheduled pickup.

Trail Tip

The lakeshore at Kontrashibuna makes an outstanding lunch spot with views in every direction — bring a sit pad and take your time, because you're unlikely to share it with anyone.
