Summit Lake North Campground
The Quick Take
Summit Lake North sits at the midpoint of Lassen's scenic park highway, perched on the north shore of one of the prettiest alpine lakes in the Cascades. This is tent camping done right — no RVs rumbling generators at dawn, no hookups, no cell service to distract you. The trade-off is real: no flush toilets, no showers, and no camp store means you need to arrive self-sufficient. But the payoff is stepping out of your tent and swimming in a volcanic lake before breakfast. The north side tends to fill before the south campground across the water, partly because the loops feel more intimate and the lake access is slightly better. Book this one if you want a classic national park basecamp with genuine quiet and don't mind roughing it a little.

Pro Tips
Summit Lake North is reservable but competitive in July and August — book the moment your window opens, especially for Loop A sites closest to the water. Midweek arrivals in September offer the best chance at walk-up availability when the crowds thin but the weather still cooperates.
The campground sits at roughly the halfway mark of the park road, making it an ideal base for both Bumpass Hell and Cinder Cone day hikes without long drives in either direction. The trail around Summit Lake itself is flat and short enough for an after-dinner stroll.
Bear activity is real here — use the provided food lockers religiously, not just for food but for anything scented including sunscreen and toothpaste. There is potable water available, but bring extra containers since the spigots can have low pressure during peak season. No firewood is sold on-site, so stock up in the gateway towns before you enter the park.
