Summit Lake South Campground
The Quick Take
Summit Lake South is the quieter half of Lassen's most popular lakeside camping area, and that distinction matters more than you might think. While the North campground draws the families with flush toilets and easier access, the South side trades those conveniences for tent-only loops tucked deeper into the forest with a more dispersed feel. You're still steps from the same gorgeous alpine lake -- perfect for a cold morning dip or lazy afternoon of fishing -- but the vibe is noticeably calmer. The trade-off is real: vault toilets instead of flush, and the same bear-country rules apply (food lockers provided, thankfully). At just twenty-two dollars a night, this is one of the better deals in the park for tent campers who want lake access without the soundtrack of generators and slamming RV doors. Choose this side if you value atmosphere over amenities.

Pro Tips
Loop E sits farthest from the road and closest to the lakeshore -- request sites in this loop when booking if you want the most secluded experience with the shortest walk to water.
The trailhead to Echo and Twin Lakes starts right from the campground, making it one of the few spots in Lassen where you can roll out of your sleeping bag and be on a backcountry trail in minutes without driving anywhere.
There is no camp store, no firewood sales, and no cell service anywhere near here. Stock up on everything in the town of Mineral or Shingletown before entering the park -- the nearest reliable supplies are a solid hour's drive from your site.
