Hike to Kings Creek Falls

What to Expect

This one starts with a gift and ends with a tax. From the trailhead at over 7,200 feet, you'll descend through a meadow corridor where wildflowers carpet the ground in midsummer, following Kings Creek as it picks up speed toward the edge. The trail splits partway down — the Upper Cascades route delivers a gradual, almost leisurely descent past a series of smaller cascades that build anticipation. Then the falls themselves appear: a thundering curtain of water plunging into a fern-draped grotto that stays impossibly green thanks to constant mist. The catch? You're paying back all that elevation on the return via the Cascades Foot Trail — a steep stone staircase that will remind your calves this wasn't just a stroll. Perfect for hikers who want waterfall drama without an all-day commitment, and photographers who appreciate natural framing.

Safety Advisory

The stone staircase section is narrow, uneven, and slick when wet from spray. Trekking poles help significantly on the climb back up, and proper footwear with grip is non-negotiable here.

Snow lingers on this trail well into late June and sometimes July at this elevation. If you're hiking early season, check conditions at the visitor center first — the trail can be impassable or dangerously icy without traction devices.

You're starting above 7,200 feet. If you drove up from the valley that morning, the altitude can sneak up on you during the steep return climb. Take it slower than you think you need to.

Season The Kings Creek Trailhead is located at high elevation (7,300 feet). The park highway must be open to through traffic to reach the trailhead. The park highway closes to through traffic in the winter and early spring seasons (approximately December through May) due to snow. Snow can linger on the Kings Creek Trail well into June or July. Hikers may benefit from snowshoes, snow/ice traction devices, and/or trekking poles when snow is present.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the Upper Cascades route down and return via the Cascades Foot Trail — the park designed it as a one-way loop for good reason. Going down the stone staircase is harder on your knees than climbing up it.

Trail Tip

Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends. The small trailhead parking lot fills fast, and the park highway sees heavy traffic through July and August. Weekday mornings are a different world entirely.

Trail Tip

The viewing platform at the base of the falls catches heavy mist — bring a microfiber cloth if you're shooting photos, and keep your phone in a zip-lock between shots. The mist is relentless and beautiful.
