What to Expect

This is one of those trails that delivers a disproportionate reward for minimal effort. From the trailhead off Hat Lake, you wander through a mixed conifer forest that opens almost theatrically into a sprawling subalpine meadow. The path is well-worn and gentle — barely enough elevation change to notice — winding through knee-high grasses and, in peak season, a staggering carpet of lupine, paintbrush, and corn lily. Lassen Peak looms to the southwest, its scarred volcanic flanks framing the meadow like a backdrop someone designed on purpose. The trail dead-ends at the meadow's heart, where a small creek threads through the wildflowers. There's no dramatic summit or cliff edge here — the payoff is the meadow itself, wide and buzzing with life. Perfect for families, photographers, and anyone who thinks a great hike doesn't have to destroy your knees.

Safety Advisory

Mosquitoes in the meadow can be relentless from late June through mid-July — bring serious bug repellent or a head net unless you enjoy donating blood.

Snow can linger on the park road and trail well into June. Check the park's road status page before driving up, as the highway through the park often doesn't fully open until late June or early July.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Peak wildflower bloom typically hits mid-July through early August — time your visit for weekday mornings to get the meadow almost entirely to yourself.

Trail Tip

The trailhead shares parking with the Hat Lake area along the main park road, and spots fill fast by 10 AM on summer weekends. Arrive before 9 or after 4 PM.

Trail Tip

Bring a macro lens or at least get low to the ground — the wildflower variety here is absurd, and the best shots come from meadow level with Lassen Peak soft-focused in the background.
