Prospect Peak
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The Dixie Fire left standing dead trees along portions of the trail — watch for snags that could fall in wind. Avoid hiking on gusty days.
The upper third of the trail is fully exposed with no shade. Heat exhaustion risk is real on summer afternoons, and there is zero tree cover for shelter if a lightning storm rolls in.

Pro Tips
Start early morning — the exposed upper slopes turn into a solar oven by midday, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August.
Carry at least two liters per person; there is no water source on this trail, and the volcanic soil reflects heat upward like a mirror.
At the summit, walk the full crater rim for the best Lassen Peak photo angle — the northwest edge gives you the classic volcanic-peak-framed-by-charred-forest shot that tells the whole story of this landscape.
