What to Expect

Prospect Peak starts deceptively mellow — a forested path that lulls you into thinking this will be a casual stroll. That illusion fades as the trail breaks out of tree cover and begins its relentless push toward the summit of this shield volcano. Much of the route is sun-exposed, and you'll pass through stretches scarred by the 2021 Dixie Fire, where blackened snags stand like sentinels against the sky. The footing is mostly packed volcanic soil with loose cinder near the top. At the summit, you're rewarded with a panoramic sweep that includes Lassen Peak, the Caribou Wilderness, and on clear days, Mount Shasta floating on the northern horizon. The crater at the top is a quiet reminder you're standing on a volcano. This one is built for hikers who earn their views and don't mind a little post-fire landscape grit.

Safety Advisory

The Dixie Fire left standing dead trees along portions of the trail — watch for snags that could fall in wind. Avoid hiking on gusty days.

The upper third of the trail is fully exposed with no shade. Heat exhaustion risk is real on summer afternoons, and there is zero tree cover for shelter if a lightning storm rolls in.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early morning — the exposed upper slopes turn into a solar oven by midday, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August.

Trail Tip

Carry at least two liters per person; there is no water source on this trail, and the volcanic soil reflects heat upward like a mirror.

Trail Tip

At the summit, walk the full crater rim for the best Lassen Peak photo angle — the northwest edge gives you the classic volcanic-peak-framed-by-charred-forest shot that tells the whole story of this landscape.
