What to Expect

Don't let the short distance fool you — Ridge Lakes packs a full-body workout into barely a mile each way. The trail launches uphill from the Sulphur Works area with zero warm-up, gaining roughly 1,000 feet through a relentless grade that'll have your calves filing a formal complaint. You'll climb through open volcanic terrain scattered with wildflowers in midsummer, crossing loose scree and rocky sections where trekking poles earn their keep. The payoff is a pair of stunning alpine lakes cradled in a volcanic cirque, their turquoise water backed by the rugged flanks of Brokeoff Mountain. On a calm day, the reflections are almost absurd. This is a trail for hikers who'd rather go up hard and fast than cruise for miles — short on distance, long on reward.

Safety Advisory

The trail crosses steep, loose volcanic scree that can shift underfoot — ankle rolls and falls are common, especially on the descent. Move deliberately and plant your poles.

Snow lingers in the cirque well into July most years, potentially obscuring the trail near the lakes. If you hit a snowfield on the upper section, turn back unless you have microspikes and can read the terrain.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early morning before 9 AM — the trail is fully exposed with zero shade, and afternoon sun on volcanic rock turns this into an oven by midday.

Trail Tip

Bring trekking poles for the descent, not just the climb. The loose volcanic scree on the way down is where most slips happen, and tired legs plus steep grade plus ball-bearing gravel is a recipe for a bad time.

Trail Tip

Once you reach the lakes, follow the use trail left around the larger lake to a flat rock shelf with unobstructed views of the cirque wall — far better lunch spot than the first shoreline you hit.
