What to Expect

Starting from the trailhead near Lake Helen along the main park road, you'll climb through an open volcanic landscape that feels more like the surface of another planet than Northern California. The trail wastes no time gaining elevation through exposed terrain dotted with stunted conifers and wildflower meadows before splitting toward three distinct alpine lakes tucked into cirques carved by ancient glaciers. Terrace Lake comes first — a brilliant turquoise pool perched on a rocky shelf. Shadow Lake sits darker and more brooding beneath steep walls, while Cliff Lake rewards the final push with the most dramatic setting of the three, framed by jagged volcanic cliffs. Lingering snow patches can make route-finding tricky into midsummer. The moderate-strenuous rating is honest: this is a short trail that punches above its weight in elevation change. Photographers and lake baggers who want three alpine gems without an all-day death march will be in their element.

Safety Advisory

Snow patches linger on north-facing sections well into July and can obscure the trail. If you lose the path, look for cairns and avoid traversing steep snow without traction devices.

There is virtually no shade on this trail. Sun exposure is relentless on clear days, and the volcanic rock radiates heat — sunscreen, a hat, and extra water are non-negotiable.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit the trail before 9 AM — the parking area near Lake Helen fills fast on summer weekends, and the exposed sections are significantly more pleasant before the sun is overhead.

Trail Tip

Bring trekking poles even though the distance is short. The descent back from Cliff Lake crosses loose volcanic scree that's hard on the knees, and any remaining snow patches become slick by afternoon.

Trail Tip

Visit all three lakes in order — Terrace, Shadow, then Cliff — and eat lunch at Cliff Lake, which has the best sheltered spots along the eastern shore with views straight up the volcanic headwall.
