Walk Manzanita Lake Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The trail sits at nearly 5,900 feet, and through April you can hit snow and ice patches — pack microspikes or traction devices if you're visiting in early season, because tree roots under wet snow are ankle-roll territory.
Bears are active around the lake from spring through fall. Store food in your vehicle or bear boxes at the day use area, and make noise on the shaded sections where sightlines are short.

Pro Tips
Time your walk for the last two hours before sunset — Lassen Peak catches alpenglow that turns the lake copper and pink, and the Chaos Crags throw dramatic shadows across the water.
Start at the Manzanita Lake Day Use Area rather than the campground trailhead to get the best unobstructed views of Lassen Peak early in your loop, when your camera battery is still full and your patience is intact.
Bring binoculars. The lake and surrounding snags are prime habitat for osprey and bald eagles, and the north shore marshy areas are loaded with wading birds in summer — you'll kick yourself if you left the optics in the car.
