What to Expect

This is the kind of trail you take when you want big volcanic scenery without breaking a sweat. Starting from Loomis Plaza, the path loops around Manzanita Lake on firm dirt with occasional tree roots and rocky patches to keep things interesting. The trail is nearly flat — we're talking negligible elevation change over less than two miles — but don't mistake easy for boring. The lake acts as a mirror for Lassen Peak and the jagged Chaos Crags, and on a calm evening the reflections are absurdly photogenic. You'll wind through a mix of conifers and open shoreline, with plenty of spots to pause and scan for osprey, bald eagles, and the occasional black bear browsing the far shore. This is a trail for anyone who thinks the best hikes are the ones where you stop more than you walk — photographers, families with young kids, and anyone who just wants to sit by a volcanic lake and watch the light change.

Safety Advisory

The trail sits at nearly 5,900 feet, and through April you can hit snow and ice patches — pack microspikes or traction devices if you're visiting in early season, because tree roots under wet snow are ankle-roll territory.

Bears are active around the lake from spring through fall. Store food in your vehicle or bear boxes at the day use area, and make noise on the shaded sections where sightlines are short.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your walk for the last two hours before sunset — Lassen Peak catches alpenglow that turns the lake copper and pink, and the Chaos Crags throw dramatic shadows across the water.

Trail Tip

Start at the Manzanita Lake Day Use Area rather than the campground trailhead to get the best unobstructed views of Lassen Peak early in your loop, when your camera battery is still full and your patience is intact.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars. The lake and surrounding snags are prime habitat for osprey and bald eagles, and the north shore marshy areas are loaded with wading birds in summer — you'll kick yourself if you left the optics in the car.
