What to Expect

The Big Hollow North Loop is one of Mammoth Cave's best-kept secrets — a backcountry ramble through dense hardwood forest that feels worlds away from the cave-tour crowds gathering at the visitor center. The trail winds through rolling Kentucky hill country, dipping into hollow after hollow where tulip poplars tower overhead and seasonal creeks cut shallow ravines across the path. The terrain is classic Appalachian plateau: rooty singletrack with enough short climbs and descents to keep your legs honest without ever punishing them. In spring, the forest floor erupts with trillium and Virginia bluebells. In fall, the canopy turns into a cathedral of gold and amber. At just over five miles, it's the kind of loop you can knock out in a relaxed morning and still have time to catch an afternoon cave tour. Perfect for hikers who want to see the above-ground side of Mammoth Cave that most visitors never bother to explore.

Safety Advisory

Tick season runs hard from April through September in this part of Kentucky. Treat clothing with permethrin and do a thorough check after your hike — the tall grass at trail edges is prime habitat.

Hunting is permitted in adjacent areas during Kentucky deer season (typically November through January). Wear blaze orange if hiking during those months, even on the trail itself.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Lincoln Trailhead off Houchins Ferry Road — it's less trafficked than the main visitor center area and puts you right at the loop's northern access point.

Trail Tip

The trail can get muddy and slick after rain, especially in the hollow bottoms where drainage pools. Boots with decent ankle support will save you from a few choice words on the descents.

Trail Tip

Bring a wildflower field guide if you're hiking between mid-March and early May — the diversity of spring ephemerals in these hollows rivals anything in Great Smoky Mountains, and you'll actually have the trail to yourself to enjoy them.
