What to Expect

Collie Ridge Trail is one of Mammoth Cave's quieter backcountry routes, and that's exactly the point. This nearly four-mile out-and-back follows the spine of Collie Ridge through mixed hardwood forest — mostly oak, hickory, and tulip poplar — with the canopy filtering light into something almost cathedral-like during peak leaf season. The trail surface is packed dirt with scattered roots and the occasional limestone outcrop, nothing technical but enough to keep you paying attention. You won't find cave entrances or dramatic overlooks here; what you will find is the kind of deep-woods Kentucky silence that the main cave tour crowds never experience. The ridge undulates gently, with a few short climbs that qualify as moderate but never punishing. This is a trail for hikers who came to Mammoth Cave and realized the best thing about the park might actually be above ground.

Safety Advisory

Ticks are aggressive in this part of Kentucky from April through September — wear treated clothing and do a thorough check after your hike, especially behind knees and along your hairline.

The trail is not blazed as frequently as front-country paths, so pay close attention at junctions and carry a downloaded trail map since cell service is unreliable on the ridge.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the backcountry trailhead off Houchin Ferry Road — parking is a small gravel pulloff that's easy to miss, so watch for the brown trail marker on your left heading south.

Trail Tip

Carry at least a liter of water per person since there are no reliable water sources along the ridge, and Kentucky humidity will drain you faster than the mileage suggests.

Trail Tip

Hike this trail in mid-to-late October when the hardwood canopy turns — the ridge acts like a color tunnel, and you'll have it almost entirely to yourself while cave tour lines stretch around the visitor center.
