What to Expect

Green River Bluffs delivers the kind of views most people associate with western parks, not a cave-famous Kentucky landscape. The trail winds through hardwood forest along the ridgeline above the Green River valley, with the canopy opening at several overlook points where limestone bluffs drop away beneath your feet. The path is well-maintained dirt and rock, with enough elevation change — roughly the equivalent of climbing a 40-story building — to get your heart rate up without destroying your knees. The real reward comes at the bluff overlooks, where the Green River carves lazy bends through forested bottomland far below. This is the trail for hikers who came to Mammoth Cave expecting nothing but underground passages and want to be pleasantly proven wrong by what's happening on the surface.

Safety Advisory

The bluff overlooks have no guardrails and the limestone edges can be slick when wet or covered in fallen leaves — stay well back from the edge, especially with children.

Ticks are aggressive in this part of Kentucky from April through October. Wear treated clothing and do a thorough check after the hike.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit this trail in the late afternoon when the western light catches the river below and most cave tour groups have already left the park — you'll likely have the bluffs to yourself.

Trail Tip

The trail shares a parking area with other popular routes near the visitor center, so arrive before 10 AM on weekends or plan for a short walk from overflow parking near the lodge.

Trail Tip

The best overlook is roughly halfway along the trail where a spur path leads to an unmarked bluff edge — look for the worn social trail on your left heading outbound. This is the photo spot.
