What to Expect

This loop trail winds through the forested hills above Mammoth Cave's underground labyrinth, connecting the dots between old saltpeter mining ruins, a historic church, and remnants of the tuberculosis hospital that once operated here — yes, doctors genuinely thought cave air would cure TB. The path rolls through hardwood forest with gentle ups and downs that add up to a modest but noticeable climb over four miles. Expect a mix of packed dirt and gravel with some root-studded sections on the steeper pitches. The canopy keeps things shaded through summer, and in fall the ridge views open up through golden hickories and scarlet maples. Spring wildflowers — trillium, bloodroot, Virginia bluebells — carpet the forest floor. This is the trail for hikers who want to understand the human story of Mammoth Cave, not just the geology beneath it.

Safety Advisory

Several sections cross exposed limestone ledges that get slick after rain — watch your footing on the downhill stretches, especially in the ravine near the Old Guides Cemetery.

Ticks are aggressive here from April through September — do a thorough check after hiking, particularly if you've brushed through the taller grass near the historical sites.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at the visitor center and hike clockwise to hit the historical structures first while your legs are fresh — the back half through the forest is easier and makes a satisfying cool-down.

Trail Tip

Pair this with a cave tour by hiking in the morning before your scheduled underground time — the trail gives context to everything you'll see below, especially the old saltpeter works.

Trail Tip

The ruins of the tuberculosis hospital near the Mammoth Cave Hotel site are easy to walk past if you're not looking — slow down between trail markers 7 and 9 and read every interpretive sign.
