Nature and History Trail

This loop trail winds through the forested hills above Mammoth Cave's underground labyrinth, connecting the dots between old saltpeter mining ruins, a historic church, and remnants of the tuberculosis hospital that once operated here — yes, doctors genuinely thought cave air would cure TB. The path rolls through hardwood forest with gentle ups and downs that add up to a modest but noticeable climb over four miles. Expect a mix of packed dirt and gravel with some root-studded sections on the steeper pitches.
