What to Expect

This is about as short and sweet as trails get — a quick jaunt from the Historic Entrance area down to where the River Styx emerges from the cave system into daylight. The path drops gently through hardwood forest along a well-worn route, and within minutes you're standing at one of the most quietly strange sights in any national park: an underground river pushing its way out of limestone and into the open air. The spring itself is mesmerizing — water that's been flowing through miles of cave passages suddenly appears, cool and clear, pooling before joining the Green River drainage. The trail is shaded, mostly smooth with a few rocky patches, and feels more like a nature walk than a hike. Perfect for families killing time before or after a cave tour, or anyone who appreciates geological oddities that most visitors walk right past.

Safety Advisory

The path near the spring can be slippery on wet limestone and muddy sections — wear shoes with decent tread rather than flip-flops, even though the trail is short.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Pair this with a cave tour — the Historic Entrance is right here, and seeing where the River Styx flows underground and then walking to where it surfaces gives you a perspective most visitors miss entirely.

Trail Tip

Visit after a good rain when the spring flow increases dramatically, making the emergence point far more impressive than during dry spells when it can slow to a trickle.

Trail Tip

Bring a flashlight and peer into the cave opening near the spring — you can sometimes see the water flowing inside the rock before it reaches the surface, which is an eerie and unforgettable sight.
