What to Expect

This is about as short as a trail gets — a quick spur off the First Creek Trail that drops you at the Second Creek backcountry campsite. The path threads through classic Kentucky hardwood forest, with tulip poplars and oaks forming a canopy overhead and the sound of Second Creek growing louder as you close in. At just two-tenths of a mile, you're basically walking from your car to a restaurant table. The campsite itself sits creekside, offering a flat, shaded spot that feels genuinely remote despite requiring minimal effort to reach. The real hiking happens on the First Creek Trail that gets you here — this spur is just the final doorstep. Perfect for backpackers who want a creek-side camp without an epic approach, or anyone looking to string together Mammoth Cave's backcountry loop with a comfortable overnight stop.

Safety Advisory

Ticks are aggressive in Mammoth Cave's backcountry from April through October — do a thorough check after settling into camp, especially around ankles and waistband.

The creek bank can be slick after rain, and the trail itself gets muddy enough to obscure the path. Gaiters or waterproof boots earn their keep here.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

This spur is unmarked enough that you can walk right past the junction with First Creek Trail — watch for the campsite marker post on your left as Second Creek becomes audible through the trees.

Trail Tip

The creek is seasonal, so if you're counting on it for water filtration at camp, plan your trip for spring or after recent rain. Carry enough to be self-sufficient in drier months.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the full First Creek and Sal Hollow loop for a proper backcountry overnight — the Second Creek campsite is the most sheltered of the backcountry options along this circuit.
