What to Expect

Starting from the Morefield Campground area, this out-and-back wastes no time getting down to business — steep switchbacks carved into the mesa's sandstone flank push you upward through scrubby pinyon-juniper woodland with little shade to speak of. The trail is rocky and uneven in spots, more desert scramble than groomed path, and the exposure means you'll feel every degree of that high-desert sun. But the grunt is mercifully short, and the payoff at the top of Point Lookout is the kind of panorama that makes you forget your burning quads. The San Juan and La Plata Mountains stack up to the north and east, while the Mancos and Montezuma Valleys spread out below like a relief map come to life. This is the trail for hikers who want a real viewpoint without committing to a half-day death march — short, punchy, and genuinely rewarding.

Safety Advisory

The summit area has unguarded drop-offs on multiple sides — the sandstone edges can be crumbly and deceptive, so keep well back from the rim, especially with kids.

There is zero shade on the upper half of the trail and no water sources anywhere along it — at nearly 8,000 feet elevation, dehydration sneaks up fast in the dry air even on cool days.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit this trail early morning before the sun clears the mesa rim — you'll hike the switchbacks in shade and reach the summit just as the valleys below light up, which is worth setting an alarm for.

Trail Tip

The trailhead sits right near Morefield Campground, so if you're staying there, you can knock this out before breakfast while day-trippers are still waiting at the park entrance station.

Trail Tip

Bring a wind layer for the summit even on warm days — Point Lookout is fully exposed and catches gusts that can drop the temperature noticeably, plus you'll want to linger up there longer than you think.
