What to Expect

Prater Ridge is Mesa Verde's best-kept secret for hikers who want to earn their views without the crowds that flock to the cliff dwellings. Starting from the Morefield Campground area, the trail wastes no time climbing through scrubby pinyon-juniper woodland, gaining a steady but manageable amount of elevation — think a long staircase, not a wall. Once you crest the ridge, the trail splits into two loop options that couldn't feel more different. The north loop puts you on the mesa's edge with sweeping views across Montezuma Valley toward the La Sal and Abajo Mountains in Utah — the kind of panorama that makes you stop mid-stride. The south loop is more intimate, threading above Prater and Morefield Canyons with views into the layered sandstone drainage below. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt with some loose rock sections. Hikers who want a real workout at Mesa Verde — instead of just walking between ruins — will find this trail deeply satisfying.

Safety Advisory

The ridge is fully exposed with zero shade for long stretches — on summer afternoons, temperatures can push well past 90 degrees, and there is no water source on the trail. Carry more than you think you need and start early.

Afternoon thunderstorms are common from July through September. The ridge is the highest point around, making it a poor place to be when lightning rolls in — check the forecast and be off the exposed sections by early afternoon.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Do the full figure-eight by combining both loops — start with the north loop in the morning when Montezuma Valley is front-lit, then finish with the south loop as the canyons fill with afternoon shadow and depth.

Trail Tip

The trailhead is at Morefield Campground, which means easy parking and access to the camp store for post-hike snacks and cold drinks — plan accordingly and leave your cooler in the car.

Trail Tip

This trail sees a fraction of the foot traffic that the archaeological sites get. If you hike midweek, you may have the entire ridge to yourself — bring a sit pad and take your time at the overlooks.
