What to Expect

Most visitors come to Mesa Verde to look down into cliff dwellings from the rim. This trail flips the script — you drop below the mesa into a steep-walled canyon where Douglas fir and Gambel oak close in overhead, trading the usual high-desert sun for welcome shade. The switchbacks are relentless on the way down, carving through sandstone ledges where you can read millions of years of geology in the exposed rock layers. At the canyon floor, the mood shifts entirely: a riparian corridor with seasonal moisture supports plant life you won't see anywhere else in the park. The catch is obvious — every foot you descend is a foot you climb back out, and that return haul earns this short trail its strenuous rating. This one rewards hikers who want to see the Mesa Verde that exists beyond the archaeological sites.

Safety Advisory

The return climb gains all 558 feet in just over a mile, which hits harder than expected at Mesa Verde's 7,000-foot elevation — pace yourself and bring more water than you think you need.

Loose rock on the switchbacks creates real slip hazard, especially when dry; sturdy boots with ankle support are not optional here.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early morning before the canyon heats up — the shaded descent feels cool, but the exposed switchbacks on the climb out bake in afternoon sun.

Trail Tip

Trekking poles earn their weight on the return ascent; the loose sandstone and steep grade make footing tricky when your legs are already tired.

Trail Tip

Register at the trailhead before you start — the park requires sign-in for backcountry-style trails, and rangers do check.
