What to Expect

This short out-and-back near Longmire packs a surprising amount of scenery into just over two miles of walking. The trail winds through old-growth forest thick with Douglas fir and western red cedar before opening up to the shores of Snow Lake, a subalpine gem tucked into a glacially carved basin. The path is well-maintained but not flat — expect some moderate ups and downs as you navigate between the two lakes, with Bench Lake serving as a quieter appetizer before the main course. The forest canopy keeps things cool and shaded for most of the route, which makes this a solid pick on warmer days when the higher elevation trails are baking. The payoff at Snow Lake is a classic Cascades postcard — still water reflecting whatever Rainier decides to show you that day. Perfect for hikers who want a taste of Rainier's backcountry without committing to a full-day death march.

Safety Advisory

Snow lingers on portions of this trail well into June, and route-finding can be tricky when the path disappears under snowpack. Wait until mid-July unless you're comfortable with navigation in whiteout conditions.

The lake shores can be slippery on wet rocks — watch your footing if you scramble down to the water's edge, especially with kids.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the trailhead near the Longmire campground rather than the Stevens Canyon Road access — the forest section is more interesting and the grade is gentler on the way in.

Trail Tip

Bring a lightweight camp chair or sit pad. Snow Lake's shoreline has rocky perches that reward lingering, and you'll want to stay longer than you planned.

Trail Tip

Hit this trail on a weekday morning in late July through September. The Longmire area draws fewer crowds than Paradise, and you may have Snow Lake nearly to yourself before 10 AM.
