What to Expect

You start at Longmire, crossing the road from the National Park Inn and picking up the trail at the west end of Trail of the Shadows. Go clockwise — trust me on this — because it keeps Rainier in front of you instead of at your back. The first stretch climbs steeply through old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar, gaining over a thousand feet of elevation in less than two miles, which means your quads will know they showed up to work. The ridge itself is the remnant of an ancient lava flow from Rainier's summit, and once you top out, you get sweeping views of the Nisqually River Valley and the mountain looming above it like a wall of ice. The descent loops you back through mossy forest that feels almost coastal. This trail rewards hikers who want a real workout disguised as a short walk — it packs a surprising punch for its modest distance.

Safety Advisory

The trail can be icy and treacherous from late fall through spring — packed snow on the steep sections turns into a slip-and-slide without microspikes or snowshoes, and route-finding gets tricky when trail markers are buried.

The elevation gain is compressed into a short distance, making the grade deceptively steep. Hikers used to judging difficulty by mileage alone will be caught off guard — take it slow on the ascent.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike clockwise starting from the Trail of the Shadows junction — the climb is steeper but shorter on this side, and you face Rainier on the ridge section instead of craning your neck backward.

Trail Tip

Longmire parking fills up by mid-morning on summer weekends. Arrive before 9 AM or after 3 PM, or use the pullouts along the road just east of the inn if the main lot is full.

Trail Tip

The best photo op is at the ridge viewpoint roughly halfway through the loop — the afternoon light hits Rainier's glaciers beautifully, but morning gives you cleaner air before the summer haze builds.
