What to Expect

Starting from the Kautz Creek trailhead near Longmire, you'll cross a rocky washout zone before the trail ducks into old-growth forest so thick the canopy swallows the sky. The first few miles climb steadily through Douglas fir and western red cedar, gaining enough elevation to make your calves register a complaint. Around mile four, the forest thins and the trail breaks into subalpine meadows that stop you in your tracks — a vast wildflower carpet stretching toward the south face of Mount Rainier, which fills your entire field of vision like a wall of glaciated rock. The historic patrol cabin sits in the meadow, looking like it belongs in a painting. The return follows the same route, but somehow the mountain views hit differently on the way back. This trail rewards hikers who don't mind putting in a full day for a payoff that rivals anything on the Wonderland Trail without the permit lottery.

Safety Advisory

The Kautz Creek crossing can be treacherous in early season or after heavy rain — the creek runs fast with glacial melt and there's no bridge. Check conditions at the Longmire Wilderness Information Center before heading out.

Snow lingers in the upper meadows well into July most years. Without microspikes or solid route-finding skills, you can lose the trail entirely above the tree line. If the meadows are buried, turn around rather than bushwhacking through fragile subalpine terrain.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Kautz Creek trailhead rather than Longmire for a shorter approach — the trail junction is better marked and you avoid the initial low-elevation slog through less interesting terrain.

Trail Tip

Late July through mid-August is the wildflower sweet spot in the meadows. Time it right and you'll walk through lupine and paintbrush fields so dense they look staged. Hit it too early and you're walking on snow.

Trail Tip

The patrol cabin and the meadow just beyond it offer the most iconic Rainier framing on the south side of the park — set up your shot with the cabin in the foreground and the mountain behind it during afternoon light when the glaciers glow.
