Kautz Creek Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The washout area is genuinely dangerous — unstable ground, exposed drop-offs, and no maintained trail beyond the closure point. Do not attempt to scramble past the barriers.
Kautz Creek can flash-flood during heavy rain or rapid snowmelt, turning the drainage into a churning mess of glacial sediment. Stay well back from the creek banks if water levels look high.

Pro Tips
Check the NPS Mount Rainier trail conditions page before driving out — the washout status changes seasonally, and partial reopenings sometimes happen without fanfare.
The trailhead sits along the Nisqually-Paradise corridor, so pair this with a stop at Christine Falls or Narada Falls on the same drive to make the trip worthwhile despite the short accessible distance.
Bring a wide-angle lens for the debris field — the scale of the old lahar damage is hard to capture but striking when you frame it against the standing old-growth on either side.
