What to Expect

Klapatche Park is one of Mount Rainier's best-kept secrets — a grueling 21-mile round trip that filters out casual day-hikers and rewards the committed with one of the most stunning alpine meadows in the entire park. Starting from the Westside Road area, the trail climbs steadily through old-growth forest thick with Douglas fir and western red cedar before breaking into subalpine parkland where Rainier looms so close it fills your entire field of vision. The final push into Klapatche Park delivers a pristine tarn reflecting the mountain's massive west face — a view most people only get on the Wonderland Trail. The terrain shifts from root-laced forest floor to rocky alpine meadow, with several stream crossings along the way. This is a trail for strong hikers who want to earn a view that most visitors to Rainier will never see.

Safety Advisory

At 21 miles round trip, this is a full-commitment day hike with limited bail-out options. Start before dawn and carry a headlamp in case you're finishing in fading light.

Snow lingers in the upper meadows well into July most years. Early-season hikers should carry microspikes and be comfortable with route-finding across snowfields where the trail disappears.

This is active black bear country. Make noise on the trail, store food properly, and know that the meadows attract bears feeding on huckleberries in late summer.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Check the NPS website for Westside Road status before you go — it's frequently closed to vehicles due to washouts, which can add several miles of road walking to an already long day.

Trail Tip

Carry a water filter rather than packing all your water in. There are reliable stream crossings in the first half of the trail, and the tarn at Klapatche Park itself is a solid refill point in summer.

Trail Tip

Time your visit for late July through mid-August when the meadows explode with lupine, paintbrush, and aster — the wildflower display against Rainier's west face is one of the most photographable scenes in the park.
