Mystic Lake Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Creek crossings between Granite Creek and Mystic Lake can be treacherous in June and early July when snowmelt peaks — water can be thigh-deep and fast-moving. Trekking poles and water shoes earn their weight here.
The Carbon Glacier moraine above Mystic Lake is actively unstable with loose rock and occasional rockfall. Stay on established trails and don't scramble onto the moraine for a closer look at the glacier.
Weather at this elevation changes without warning — you can start in sunshine at Sunrise and hit whiteout fog or freezing rain at the lake. Pack rain layers and a warm mid-layer even on bluebird days.

Pro Tips
Start from Sunrise no later than 7 AM — you need every hour of daylight for this 22-mile round trip, and the parking lot fills by 9 AM on summer weekends anyway.
Carry a water filter rather than packing all your water. You'll cross multiple reliable streams along the Wonderland Trail section, which saves you hauling several liters over the full distance.
If you want to cut the mileage nearly in half, approach from the Carbon River entrance instead — it's about a mile shorter and gives you a completely different perspective, climbing through temperate rainforest before opening up to the lake basin.
