What to Expect

Starting from the Sunrise area — already one of the highest points you can drive to in the park — the Palisades Lakes Trail rolls through subalpine meadows that explode with lupine and paintbrush in late July before dropping into a quieter, more rugged landscape. The first couple of miles feel deceptively easy as you traverse open terrain with Rainier looming over your shoulder, but the trail eventually descends toward a chain of alpine lakes tucked beneath the dark volcanic cliffs that give the trail its name. Those palisade walls rising above still, mirror-like water are the payoff, and they feel earned. The return trip reverses the script — that gentle descent becomes a steady climb back to Sunrise. This one rewards hikers who appreciate destination lakes without the crowds that mob Spray Park or the Skyline Trail.

Safety Advisory

Snow lingers on sections of this trail well into July most years. The descent toward the lakes can be slippery on packed snow without microspikes, and route-finding gets tricky when trail markers are buried.

There is no reliable water source until you reach the lakes themselves. The Sunrise area is exposed and dry, and the sun at this elevation is no joke — carry at least two liters per person.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive at the Sunrise parking lot by 8:30 AM on summer weekends — it fills by mid-morning and the park will turn you away at the entrance. Weekdays are dramatically less hectic.

Trail Tip

The trail loses elevation on the way out, which means you're climbing on the return when you're tired. Save more water and energy for the second half than you think you'll need.

Trail Tip

The upper Palisades Lake has the best reflection shots of the volcanic cliffs. Time your arrival for mid-morning when the sun lights up the rock walls but the lake surface is still calm — afternoon winds kill the mirror effect.
