Shadow Lakes Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
This trail sits above 6,000 feet and is almost entirely exposed — afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during summer. If you see clouds building over the Cascades by midday, head back.
Snow lingers on the Frozen Lake section well into July most years, and the trail can be difficult to follow across snowfields. Microspikes are worth the pack weight if you're visiting before August.

Pro Tips
Take the loop counterclockwise — hit Shadow Lake first when morning light is on the mountain, then return along Sourdough Ridge as the sun climbs and illuminates the full north face of Rainier.
The Sunrise parking lot fills by 9:30 AM on summer weekends. The timed entry reservation system means you'll need to plan ahead — book your window as early as possible or aim for a weekday visit.
The stretch along Sourdough Ridge on the return loop is one of the best spots in the entire park for marmot sightings. They sun themselves on the rocks right next to the trail and are absurdly photogenic.
