What to Expect
Twin Firs Loop is less a hike and more a standing appointment with trees that were already old when the country was founded. The 0.4-mile loop threads through a cathedral of old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar just inside the Nisqually Entrance, and the namesake twin firs — two massive trunks fused at the base — are the obvious centerpiece. The trail is wide, soft underfoot with years of duff, and almost entirely flat, which means your neck does all the work as you crane upward trying to find the canopy. Filtered light, the smell of damp bark, and an eerie quiet even when the park is crowded. This is the trail for people who drove four hours to see what a real forest looks like, for grandparents with grandkids in tow, and for anyone who wants to shake the parking lot out of their legs before pushing deeper into the park.

Trailhead Twin Firs Loop Trail
- 1
Do this loop first thing in the morning before the Nisqually entrance backs up — it takes 20 minutes and resets your headspace before a longer day of driving or hiking.
- 2
Bring a wide-angle lens or use your phone's ultrawide mode; the standard camera angle makes the firs look average when they are emphatically not — you need to exaggerate the verticals to capture what you're actually seeing.
- 3
The trail connects to the path toward Longmire, so if you have kids who want to keep going, you can extend the walk rather than looping back — check the Longmire area map at the trailhead kiosk before you start.
