Le'ala Shoreline Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Heat exposure is the primary hazard — with no shade and tropical humidity regularly above 80%, heat exhaustion can sneak up fast. Carry more water than you think you need and know the early signs: dizziness, nausea, and stopping to sweat.
Volcanic rock along the shoreline can be razor-sharp and slippery when wet. Closed-toe shoes with good grip are non-negotiable — flip-flops will end your hike with a trip to the clinic.
Rogue waves and strong currents are a real concern along exposed Pacific shoreline. Stay well back from the water's edge, especially during high surf advisories.

Pro Tips
Start before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m. — the equatorial sun here is no joke, and there is zero shade on this trail. Mid-day attempts will feel like hiking inside a toaster oven.
Wear reef-safe sunscreen and reapply every 45 minutes. The combination of direct sun and ocean reflection means you are getting hit from both directions. A lightweight long-sleeve sun shirt is smarter than sunscreen alone.
Check the tide schedule before heading out. Low tide exposes the best tide pools along the shore and gives you more room on the rocky sections. High tide can make some stretches slippery and tight.
