What to Expect

This is one of the most remote summit hikes in the entire National Park system, and it earns every bit of that reputation. From the village of Fitiuta on Tau Island, the trail climbs relentlessly through dense tropical rainforest — we're talking thick canopy, tangled roots underfoot, and humidity that hits you like a wall. The path is rough and often muddy, more jungle bushwhack than groomed trail, with nearly 1,800 feet of vertical packed into just three miles each way. As you gain elevation, the forest thins and the views crack open: the vast Pacific stretching in every direction, the volcanic ridgeline of Tau falling away beneath you, and on clear days, the neighboring islands of Ofu and Olosega floating on the horizon. The summit — the highest point in American Samoa — feels genuinely earned. This one is for adventurers who want bragging rights and don't mind working in a sauna to get them.

Safety Advisory

The trail is frequently overgrown and poorly marked, making navigation difficult. Getting off-route in dense tropical forest with no cell service is a real risk — do not attempt this solo without a GPS track or local guide.

Heat and humidity are extreme year-round. This is a tropical island at sea level climbing to over 2,000 feet, and heatstroke is a genuine concern. Carry at least three liters of water per person and know the signs of heat exhaustion.

The upper ridge can be exposed and slippery, with steep drop-offs on either side. Conditions deteriorate fast when rain moves in, and tropical squalls can arrive with little warning.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at first light, ideally by 6:30 AM — morning hours offer the coolest temperatures and the best chance of clear summit views before clouds roll in around midday.

Trail Tip

Wear trail runners with aggressive tread rather than heavy boots. The trail is perpetually muddy and slick with root systems, and lighter footwear gives you better agility on the jungle sections. Bring trekking poles if you have them.

Trail Tip

Arrange a local guide through the village of Fitiuta before you go — the trail is not well-marked in places and the route-finding through dense rainforest can be genuinely confusing. Guides also know which sections are currently overgrown.
