What to Expect

This is less a hike and more a pilgrimage to one of the most stunning beaches in the entire National Park system — and hardly anyone knows it exists. You'll walk along Ofu's south shore, where powdery white sand meets water so clear it looks photoshopped. The trail is dead flat, hugging the coastline with barely enough elevation change to qualify as a speed bump. The real attraction is what's just offshore: a coral reef ecosystem that marine biologists have called one of the healthiest on Earth, with brain corals the size of small cars and fish so abundant they bump into your mask. The sand can get scorching underfoot at midday, and coconut palms offer occasional shade but not much. This is paradise for snorkelers, beachcombers, and anyone who wants to feel like they've reached the edge of the map.

Safety Advisory

Strong currents can develop along the reef edge, especially during outgoing tides. Stay inside the reef flat where the water is calm and shallow — the drop-off beyond it is no joke.

There is zero shade infrastructure and no potable water along the walk. Bring at least a liter per person and cover up — the equatorial sun at this latitude is brutal, even on overcast days.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Bring reef-safe sunscreen — this is not negotiable. The coral here is exceptionally healthy and unprotected reef kills it. Standard sunscreen with oxybenzone is essentially poison for these reefs.

Trail Tip

Pack your own snorkel gear. There are no rental shops on Ofu, no concession stands, no gift shops. Once you're here, you have what you brought and nothing else.

Trail Tip

Fly to Ofu from Pago Pago on the inter-island prop plane — it runs a few times a week and seats fill fast. Book well in advance and confirm the day before, because schedules shift with weather and demand.
