What to Expect

Tumu Mountain Trail plunges you into the kind of thick, humid tropical forest that makes you feel like you've stepped back a few thousand years. The canopy closes in quickly, filtering sunlight into green-gold shafts while the air hums with insects — this is not a trail where you forget the bug spray. The path winds through dense vegetation on the island of Ta'u, one of the most remote and least-visited corners of the entire national park system. Expect muddy, root-laced footing and the occasional need to push through encroaching foliage. The payoff is the raw, untouched atmosphere itself — no crowds, no infrastructure, just you and a Polynesian rainforest that predates everything you know. This trail is made for adventurers who measure a hike's worth by how far it takes them from the familiar.

Safety Advisory

The trail surface can become dangerously slick after rain, which happens frequently in this tropical climate. Trekking poles and shoes with aggressive tread are strongly recommended.

Heat and humidity are relentless even under canopy. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion — dizziness, nausea, or a headache that won't quit. Start early and turn around if your body tells you to.

This is a remote trail on a remote island with no cell service and no nearby medical facilities. Hike with a partner and let someone at your lodging know your plan and expected return time.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Apply DEET-based repellent before you even leave your lodging — the mosquitoes on Ta'u are aggressive and start working you over the moment you hit the trailhead. Reapply every 90 minutes.

Trail Tip

Wear lightweight long sleeves and long pants despite the heat. The combination of biting insects, thorny vegetation, and sun-filtering canopy makes coverage more comfortable than exposed skin.

Trail Tip

Ta'u has extremely limited services — bring all your water and snacks from Tutuila. There are no reliable refill points on the trail or nearby.
