Brooklyn Campground
The Quick Take
Brooklyn Campground is about as stripped-down as camping gets in New River Gorge, and that's exactly the point. With just a handful of tent-only sites perched on the banks of the New River near the Cunard access point, this is the kind of place where you fall asleep to moving water and wake up to mist rolling off the gorge. There are no showers, no potable water, no camp store -- just you, your gear, and one of the best river access points on the southern end of the park. The fact that it's free and open year-round makes it a legitimate basecamp for paddlers and hikers hitting the Southside trails. If you need electricity or a flush toilet, look elsewhere. But if you want riverside camping without the circus, Brooklyn is your spot. Best for experienced tent campers who travel self-contained and want direct river access without competing for space.

Pro Tips
Even though it's free, Brooklyn requires a reservation -- don't assume you can just roll up. Grab your permit through Recreation.gov ahead of time, especially for spring and fall weekends when the gorge is at its best.
The Southside Trailhead is right here, giving you direct access to Long Point Trail and its iconic bridge overlook without fighting for parking at the main trailhead. Start early and you'll likely have the trail to yourself.
Pack in every drop of water you'll need -- there's no potable source at the campground. A collapsible five-gallon jug per person per day is the move, and stock up on firewood before you arrive since there's no camp store within easy reach.
