Castle Rock Hike
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Wet sandstone here turns into a skating rink. If it rained in the last 24 hours, expect slick conditions on every surface — the rock steps, the scramble sections, all of it. Trekking poles help but won't save a careless step.
Skip this trail entirely if there's ice or snow. The scrambling sections that make it fun in dry conditions become genuinely dangerous when frozen, with steep drop-offs and no guardrails to catch a slip.

Pro Tips
Extend the adventure by continuing past the 0.6-mile mark onto Grandview Rim Trail — turn right at the junction for Turkey Spur's overlook, then loop back on the upper rim trail for a 3.2-mile circuit that gives you both the gorge's guts and its skyline views.
Wear shoes with aggressive tread and stiff soles — the sandstone steps are polished smooth in places and grip matters more here than on almost any trail in the park. Trail runners won't cut it.
The rock formations between the crevices create natural frames that photographers love. Shoot during late morning when sunlight filters into the narrow passages and lights up the layered sandstone walls.
