What to Expect

This is one of those trails that delivers way more than its modest distance suggests. Starting from the Grandview parking area — the highest point in the entire park — you'll follow a well-maintained ridge path through a canopy of hardwoods and thick rhododendron tunnels that feel almost Appalachian-jungle in summer. The trail connects three overlooks, each offering a different angle on the New River's dramatic horseshoe bend hundreds of feet below. The main overlook hits you first with a wide-open panorama, then the path threads through forest to North Overlook and finally Turkey Spur, where the gorge drops away beneath your feet in a way that tightens your chest. The footing is generally smooth with some root tangles and rocky patches, and the canopy keeps you shaded on scorching days. Perfect for families who want real scenery without a death march, or anyone short on time who still wants that jaw-drop gorge view.

Safety Advisory

The overlooks have steep, unguarded drop-offs with exposure of several hundred feet. Keep children close and watch your footing on wet rock — the sandstone gets slick after rain.

Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes are present in the gorge area, especially in warmer months. Stay on the trail and watch where you step, particularly around rocky outcrops and log piles.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit Turkey Spur Overlook first thing in the morning — it faces east and catches golden light on the gorge walls while Main Overlook is still in shadow. Most visitors never make it past the main viewpoint, so you'll likely have it to yourself.

Trail Tip

Late May through mid-June transforms the trail into a rhododendron cathedral — massive blooms line both sides of the path. Time your visit for peak bloom and you'll get photographs that look like another planet.

Trail Tip

The trail is listed as one-way at 1.6 miles, so budget for the return trip. Do the full out-and-back hitting all three overlooks, and take the short spur trails to each viewpoint rather than just peering from the main path — the best vantage points are always at the end of those spurs.
