What to Expect

The Rend Trail is one of New River Gorge's quieter corridors — nearly seven miles round trip through dense Appalachian hardwood forest with a side of industrial history you won't find on most national park trails. The path follows old mining roads and rail grades, which means the footing is generally forgiving despite the moderate rating. You'll pass through remnants of the coal mining era: old foundations, rusting equipment, and the ghostly outlines of a community that once thrived in this gorge. The trail connects to the Church Loop, where a preserved church stands as a striking reminder of the region's past. The forest canopy keeps things shaded and cool, even in summer. This is a hike for people who want to stretch their legs and lose themselves in history rather than chase a postcard-worthy overlook.

Safety Advisory

Stay out of and away from old mine openings and crumbling structures — the stonework and timbers are decades past their expiration date and can collapse without warning.

Hunting is permitted in the preserve sections of New River Gorge. If you're hiking during fall and winter, wear blaze orange and check NPS notices for active hunting seasons in the area.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Link up with the Church Loop Trail at the midpoint to break the out-and-back monotony — it adds minimal distance but gives the hike a more complete feel and hits the best historic structures.

Trail Tip

Start from the Grandview area trailhead in the morning when the gorge fog is still settling through the trees — the old mining ruins look particularly atmospheric with mist hanging around them.

Trail Tip

Bring a trail map or download the NPS app offline beforehand. The Rend Trail intersects several unmarked social trails near the historic sites, and cell service in the gorge is essentially nonexistent.
