Stroll on the Sandstone Boardwalk

What to Expect

This is one of the most rewarding short walks in all of New River Gorge — a flat boardwalk that delivers views most trails make you sweat for. You'll stroll out over the New River to Sandstone Falls, the largest waterfall on the river, where water cascades over a quarter-mile-wide ledge of ancient sandstone. The boardwalk is smooth and level, with interpretive signs along the way, and multiple overlook platforms let you linger at different vantage points. An optional dirt spur trail loops off the boardwalk for those who want a little more adventure underfoot. The falls themselves are mesmerizing — not a single dramatic plunge but a wide, stepped curtain of whitewater that changes character with the seasons. This is the trail for photographers, families with little ones, grandparents, and anyone who believes the best hikes are measured in views per step, not miles per hour.

Safety Advisory

The boardwalk can be slippery when wet or icy — take it slow in winter and early spring mornings when frost lingers on the planks.

Do not climb over railings or wade near the falls — the current above Sandstone Falls is deceptively strong and the rocks are dangerously slick.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Visit after a few days of rain when the New River is running high — the falls transform from a gentle cascade into a roaring wall of whitewater that you can feel through the boardwalk.

Trail Tip

Take the short dirt spur trail that branches off the boardwalk for a slightly different angle on the falls and a taste of actual trail if the boardwalk feels too civilized.

Trail Tip

Sunrise and sunset shooters should stake out the downstream overlook platform, where the light hits the falls at an angle that turns the spray golden — bring a tripod since the boardwalk railing is too high to rest a camera on.
