What to Expect

Timber Ridge Trail is the kind of hike you knock out before lunch and still feel like you accomplished something. This one-mile out-and-back follows a forested ridgeline through a canopy of hardwoods — oaks, maples, and tulip poplars that turn the trail into a green tunnel in summer and a color explosion come October. The path is well-trodden and mostly flat, with the kind of soft dirt-and-leaf-litter surface that's easy on the knees. You won't find dramatic cliff overlooks here, but the ridge offers filtered views through the trees of the surrounding gorge country, and the quiet is the real reward. Birdsong replaces traffic noise within the first hundred yards. This is a trail for people who want a peaceful forest walk without committing to a half-day expedition — perfect for stretching your legs after the drive in or winding down before heading home.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Pair this with nearby longer trails like Long Point or Endless Wall for a full day — Timber Ridge works perfectly as a warm-up or cool-down hike.

Trail Tip

The ridge catches a breeze even on humid summer days, making this one of the more comfortable short walks in the gorge when temperatures climb into the eighties.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars if you're into birding — the mixed hardwood canopy along the ridge attracts warblers, woodpeckers, and the occasional pileated woodpecker drumming on a dead snag.
