What to Expect

This is deep-wilderness backpacking through the heart of the North Cascades, following a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail along two major creek drainages connected by an old wagon route. You'll push through dense old-growth forest along Agnes Creek, cross avalanche chutes with views of glaciated peaks, and eventually connect to Bridge Creek as it winds toward Stehekin. The terrain alternates between riverside flats and moderate climbs through hemlock and cedar canopy, with creek crossings that can run high in early summer. Wildlife is everywhere — this corridor is one of the most active bear zones in the park, and you'll see tracks and scat well before you see the animals themselves. This trail belongs to experienced backpackers comfortable with multi-day routes, bear country protocols, and self-reliance in remote terrain where help is a long way out.

Safety Advisory

Bears along this corridor have a documented history of aggressive food-seeking behavior at campsites — cook and store food well away from your tent, and never leave packs unattended.

Creek crossings can be dangerous during spring snowmelt and after heavy rain; trekking poles and water shoes are essential if you're hiking before August.

This is remote backcountry with no cell service and limited ranger patrols — carry a PLB or satellite communicator and file a trip plan with someone reliable.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Plan your food storage carefully — bear canisters are strongly recommended over hanging in this drainage, as bears here have learned to defeat most hang systems at established camps.

Trail Tip

Time your trip for late July through September to avoid dicey creek crossings; Agnes Creek in snowmelt season can turn ankle-deep fords into thigh-deep wading exercises.

Trail Tip

Resupply logistics matter: coordinate with the Stehekin shuttle and ferry schedule if you're doing a point-to-point, since missing the last boat means an unplanned night in the valley.
