What to Expect

This is one of those rare North Cascades trails that lets you experience genuine old-growth forest without punishing your knees. The path winds through towering Douglas fir and western red cedar, staying mostly level as it traces Agnes Creek deeper into the valley. The forest floor is lush with ferns and moss — the kind of Pacific Northwest cathedral that makes you whisper without knowing why. At the trail's end, you'll reach a viewpoint overlooking Agnes Gorge, where the creek has carved a narrow slot through rock, churning whitewater visible far below. The elevation gain is barely noticeable — about the same as climbing a ten-story building spread over two and a half miles. This is the trail for hikers who want wilderness atmosphere without the suffering, and for anyone who thinks the North Cascades are only about brutal alpine scrambles.

Safety Advisory

The gorge overlook has no railing or barrier — the drop is real and the rock can be slick when wet. Keep children close and watch your footing near the edge.

This is black bear country with occasional grizzly sightings in the Stehekin corridor. Carry bear spray and make noise on blind corners through the dense forest.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the High Bridge Ranger Station area off the Stehekin Valley Road — getting to the trailhead itself is part of the adventure since you'll need to take the Lady of the Lake ferry or arrange Stehekin shuttle access.

Trail Tip

The trail can be muddy and root-tangled even in summer, so trail runners or light hikers with grip work better than sandals despite the easy grade.

Trail Tip

The gorge viewpoint rewards patience — arrive when afternoon light angles into the canyon and illuminates the mist rising off Agnes Creek for the best photography conditions.
