What to Expect

This is not a casual stroll — it's a relentless uphill grind that gains nearly a vertical mile over less than five miles, the kind of climb that makes you question your life choices somewhere around the halfway mark. You'll start by catching a water taxi across Ross Lake (there's no driving to this trailhead), then immediately begin switchbacking through old-growth forest that gradually thins into open subalpine meadows. The trail is well-maintained but unforgiving in its grade, with the final push above treeline exposing you to wind and weather across rocky, barren slopes. The payoff is the historic fire lookout where Jack Kerouac spent 63 days in 1956, scribbling what became 'Desolation Angels' — and the 360-degree panorama of Ross Lake, Hozomeen Mountain, and the jagged North Cascades skyline will make you understand why it rewired his brain. This trail belongs to strong hikers who appreciate earning their views the hard way.

Safety Advisory

The upper two-thirds of the trail is fully exposed with no shade or shelter — lightning is a serious risk during afternoon storms from July through September. Turn back if dark clouds build.

Snow can linger on the upper slopes well into July, making route-finding difficult and footing treacherous. Check recent trip reports before committing to this one early in the season.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

You'll need to arrange the Ross Lake Resort water taxi to reach the trailhead at the east side of the lake — book well in advance for summer weekends, and confirm pickup times so you're not stranded.

Trail Tip

Start early to tackle the exposed upper section before afternoon heat and thunderstorms roll in. Carry at least three liters of water — there are no reliable water sources on the climb itself.

Trail Tip

The lookout cabin is one of the most photogenic spots in the North Cascades. Golden hour light on Hozomeen's twin summits is extraordinary, and if you're backpacking, camping near the summit for sunrise is worth the extra weight.
